Cello
Down in the meadow (2025) 7'
Solo cello
Commissioned by and written for Bryan Hayslett
Programme note
When Bryan asked me to write a lullaby I knew immediately what I wanted to write for him. I'm really interested in the darkness inherent in so many well-known lullabies, and when I was very young my mother used to sing me All the Pretty Little Horses. As a small child I loved the change from light to dark between the major and minor modes. As an adult I looked up the history of the song, and I found the depth of the darkness of its origins profoundly moving and disturbing. Down in the meadow is a piece for solo cello of Americana-isms; of light and dark, the giddiness of childhood, and the blurriness of memory and history.
